Padding

A well-finished mount has no rough edges and is padded where it comes into contact with the object. Padding requirements vary considerably according to the nature and condition of the objects, so we offer a range of materials including felt in sheet or tape form, sueded polyethylene in sheet, Teflon and polyolefin tubings.
All are either adhesive-backed or heat-shrinkable for ease of use.

Each sheet is a nominal 8-1/2" x 12"

What's with the change in the Sueded Poly?
It's no doubt become apparent to all our mountmaker colleagues that we have gradually been replacing our original sueded poly padding with a new material. We’ve had conversations about the how-and-why with many of you individually.

The original material was manufactured in Europe, but a few years ago the manufacturer discontinued making it. The importer kindly alerted us to this change, which allowed us the opportunity to claim as much of the suede as was available. We’ve been providing from that yardage in the time since.

Knowing that we had to eventually find a replacement before we reached the end of the original stock, we considered several options before selecting the new line of material that you now see in some of the colors. We chose seven “replacement” colors, to be as close to the original seven colors as possible. These seven were submitted to Oddy testing and they all passed.

As we come to the end of a color in the original material, we’ve been feeding in the new material. That changeover has so far happened to four colors. We gave the new material new names : Carbon, Fog, Chestnut and --- White. (OK - White then is White now..)

We’ve continued to call all these items by the original “Sueded Polyethylene” name even though the new material is, as it turns out, largely nylon. We were a bit stumped as to how to handle this two-horse team. We thought it would be less confusing to keep the one original name rather than offering two similar paddings with two different names, with colors and content shifting over time as we shifted to the new material. Now, as more than half of the colors offered are of the new material, it’s time to make a shift in the name.

It's all “Sueded Padding” from here on in.

          Felt Tapes

Our framer friends asked for our felt in thin strips for cushioning the rabbets in their frames. We're working on getting this lovely item back on line.

But as we search for a new manufacture of the felt tapes, we have a few sales units left of the 1" White Felt Tape. We've packaged them as (2) rolls per order, each roll is 50 ft (giving a total of 100ft.)

Additionally, few odd sized rolls will be showing up in the next little while over on the Odd Lots page, so go check that out as well.

          Polyolefin 2:1 Heat-shrink Tubing

          + Click For Details

This clear flexible tubing is an ideal padding material for brass rod. It shrinks quickly and evenly with a heat gun at temperatures of  275°F/135°C. When freely recovered it will reduce down to 50% of its original inside diameter. Our polyolefin tubing is non-flame-retardant because of potential off-gassing problems associated with flame-retardant materials.

Sold in 12" lengths, 6 lengths per pack.
