TIP Drill Gauges

TIP: When drilling through deck or backboard fabrics, especially those not fully glued in place, first make a small x-shaped cut in the fabric to reduce the chance of the drill bit wrapping threads around itself and messing up the fabric's weave. Then, position a clean drill gauge over the x-cut (we'll put masking tape on the back to pad the metal), choosing a hole two sizes larger than your drill bit. Press down firmly on the gauge while drilling through it to keep drill shavings from getting under the fabric, making an unsightly lump. If we're drilling a backboard, we'll also tape a small paper "pocket" to the backboard under the drill to catch the shavings.
