LINEN Fabric Oddy Test Results

Oddy Test Results for samples of Linen Fabric

(test 1 of 2) TEST PROCEDURE: Oddy

An Oddy test was conducted on six samples of linen and linen-blend fabrics.

The test procedure was as follows: Each sample was enclosed in a separate glass vial with blanks of polished lead, silver and copper.  Half of the sample was placed beneath the blanks so that any effect of direct contact as well as volatile contaminates could be assessed. Moist cotton was placed in the test vial, which was then sealed and exposed to 60ºF for 35 days.

A control vial was prepared in the same manner, without any sample, and exposed to the same conditions.

DAY SAMPLE NUMBER PRODUCT DESCRIPTION OBSERVATION
1-35 Sample 1 75-001 No change in test blanks.
1-35 Sample 2 75-002 No change in test blanks.
1-35 Sample 3 No change in test blanks.
1-35 Sample 4 75-003 No change in test blanks.
1-35 Sample 5 75-004 No change in test blanks.
1-35 Sample 6 75-005 No change in test blanks.
1-35 Control No change in test blanks.

INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS

None of the samples showed significant effect on the test blanks. The lead blank exposed to Sample 3 showed the most change. A small amount of white powdery material was noticed on one edge touching the sample. This was noticed under magnification at the end of the test period. The material should probably not be used in contact with objects unless tested more extensively. A dark surface formed on the lead blanks exposed to Samples 4 and 5. The layer was even and may be protective. The change did not cause the samples to fail the Oddy test.

(test 2 of 2) TEST PROCEDURE: Oddy

An Oddy test was conducted on two samples of linen fabrics.

The test procedure was as follows: Each sample was enclosed in a separate glass vial with blanks of polished lead, silver and copper.  Half of the sample was placed beneath the blanks so that any effect of direct contact as well as volatile contaminates could be assessed. Moist cotton was placed in the test vial, which was then sealed and exposed to 55ºC for 42 days.

A control vial was prepared in the same manner, without any sample, and exposed to the same conditions.

DAY SAMPLE NUMBER PRODUCT DESCRIPTION OBSERVATION
1-42 Sample 1 75-006 No change in test blanks.
1-42 Sample 2 75-007 No change in test blanks.
1-42 Control No change in test blanks.

INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS

Neither of the linen fabrics caused any observable change to, or corrosion of, the metal blanks.
