Oddy Test Results for the eight fabric samples (2 weights of cotton Muslin & 4 weights of cotton Flannel, samples tested in washed and unwashed state) as follows:

(Test 1 of 2)

An Oddy style test was conducted on eight  fabric samples that represent four different materials. The test procedure was as follows: Each sample was enclosed in a glass vial with blanks of polished lead, silver and copper. Half of each sample was placed beneath the blanks so that the affect of direct contact as well as volatile contaminates could be assessed. Moist cotton was placed in each vial, which was then sealed and exposed to 60°C for 30 days. A control vial was prepared as above, but without a fabric sample, and exposed to the same conditions.

Oddy Test Results for one sample of cotton flannel

The standard Oddy tests were carried out on the following material as well as the sodium azide test for active sulfur compunds. The tests were carried out for 45 days at 30 degrees centigrade using pure coupons of copper, lead and silver at high RH.  In no case was any corrosion of the coupons observed. No reaction above background occurred with the sodium azide test. The material is therefore considered to be safe in the storage or display of museum objects.

One sample of 7.5 oz. (called 8 oz.)  100% Cotton,  Canton Flannel  (81-150)
