Working Fabrics

Storage mounts, moving mounts, dust-free storage, mannequins, textile display....whatever you can think of, these “working fabrics” are a great help. We offer a selection of various muslins, flannels, stockinettes and twill tapes. The muslin, flannel and twill are unbleached, undyed, sizing-free and natural colored. The stockinette is 100% polyester...snowy white and a new addition: black stockinette!

Muslin                                                                    Muslin and Flannel Oddy Results

100% cotton muslin, unbleached and unsized, for textile mounts, covering mannequins, internal forms, etc. Offered in two weights: the lighter 78 square thread-count fabric has a very nice drape similar to batiste, and is completely resin free; the heavier 200 square thread-count fabric is a durable-press muslin similar to broadcloth.

The muslins are sold in 5 yard pieces (4.5m).

Flannel                                                               Muslin and Flannel Oddy Results

100% cotton flannel, unbleached and unsized, for protective padding or 'tooth' to help hold textiles of any size in place. Offered in two weights, both of which can be glued or stapled to a wedge or tube for textile positioning and protection from the substrate.

• The 4 ounce (113 gm) flannel is double-napped (fuzzy on both sides), with a very nice tooth.
• The 6 ounce (170 gm) flannel is single-napped (fuzzy on one side).  It is almost twice as thick as the 4 ounce flannel and should be used where more padding is required.  The napped side is heavier than the 4 ounce and provides a better grab.  The back side shows as a twill pattern.

The flannels are sold in 5 yard lengths (4.5m).

Stockinette in White or Black 
A seamless tubular knit fabric which can be stretched to cover the various parts of forms or mannequins. Or stuffed with polyester batting, it's used to cushion a fold in fabric where you wish to prevent a crease in long-term storage. Other uses?  Let's hear from you..............

We're offering widths of 3", 6" and 10".  The polyester has a nice "slip"  that we feel helps ease any fabrics onto forms covered in the polyester stockinette. All sizes stretch to about twice their width.

We've been searching for a black stockinette to cover our mannequins with - particularly at the neck! After much looking, we have found a beautiful black stockinette made from 100% spun polyester. This yarn-dyed product is made to order for us here in the U.S. in three widths:  3", 6" and 10".   It is more expensive than the more common white stockinette,  in part due to the yarn dying.

Twill Tape

A lovely unbleached, unsized 100% cotton twill tape, finer and softer than others we've found. Very useful for making storage mounts, for packing, shipping and for a host of other installation needs. 
Sold in 36 yard rolls (33m), in four widths. Some rolls may contain splices.

Case Dressing Fabrics
The Dress Fabrics are custom-ordered and non-returnable.  Please choose carefully before placing your order.  To avoid disappointment, please allow at least four weeks for delivery.  Shipments are oversize and incur extra UPS shipping costs.
Sample rings are available upon request for both Linens and Plain Weave.

Before finally installing an artifact into its sealed exhibit case, it is important to determine that no harm will be caused to the artifact by the materials already present in the case. This is why Medex is preferred over any sort of plywood or why paints being used should pass testing for harmful off-gassing. Likewise, case dressing fabrics can sometimes cause problems within the closed case environment ---problems leading to tarnishing or corrosion of artifacts. We currently offer two types of fabric that we've submitted, with successful results, to Oddy testing.

We are very excited to have found these beautiful linens and linen/cotton blends from Czechoslovakia and Poland. They are very similar to Belgian linens at a fraction of the cost. They are ideal for dressing case interiors and covering blocks and are available in seven neutral colors, without sizing or fire-retardants, ranging from black to beige to white.  
Widths range from 54" to 58" (1.37m). Sold by the yard (0.9m) / 5 yard minimum.

Our polyester case dressing fabric is manufactured by one of New England's oldest textile mills. 

The fabric has a relatively large weave when looked at up close (like in your hand), but in the gallery, in the cases what you get is a wash of solid color that has a subtle texture to give it depth. Very pleasing.  And when you have to move an object, therefore leaving a hole behind where the old mount came out, this particular weave can be very forgiving.

These polyesters offers the following advantages:
                    The fibers are made from 100% recycled material. Very cool.
                    The weave is perfectly straight and true.
                    The fabric is non-directional.
                    Polyester has a low coefficient of moisture absorption.
                    Computer color matching insures color consistency.

These fabrics are currently available in 17 solid colors, from black to deep burgundy to dark spruce to sandy beige. 66" wide (1.68m).
