Padding

A well finished mount has no rough edges and is padded where it comes into contact with the object. Padding requirements vary considerably according to the nature and condition of the objects, so we offer a range of materials including felt in sheet or tape form,  sueded polyethylene in sheets, Teflon and polyolefin tubings. All are either adhesive-backed or heat-shrinkable for ease of use.

Our felt comes in 9 helpful colors in 9" x 12" sheets (229 x 305mm) backed with an acrylic-based adhesive. We offer these tested colors in a full set of 10 sheets, or as individual colors in packs of three sheets per color. Fiber content is either polyester (100% recycled!), acrylic or a poly-acrylic blend.
Yardage available with or without  adhesive.

Our adhesive-backed black felt tape, now of acrylic fiber rather than polyester.  We have had it cut into widths of 1/4", 1/2" and 1" (6.25, 12.5 & 25 mm).  The framers among you have requested these widths.

Benchmark is pleased to offer another wonderful option in padding material. At +/-0.015" thick  (0.4mm), our acrylic adhesive-backed sueded polyethylene is thinner than felt.  It has a lovely "hand" and cuts very cleanly. A real favorite.

What Brass Rod sizes go with what size 2:1 Polyolefin Heat-shrink??

This clear flexible tubing is an ideal padding material for brass rod. It shrinks quickly and evenly with a heat gun at temperatures of  275°F/135°C. When freely recovered it will reduce down to 50% of its original inside diameter. Our polyolefin tubing is non-flame-retardant because of potential off-gassing problems associated with flame-retardant materials.
Sold in 12" lengths (305mm.), 6 lengths per pack.

TeflonTFE 4:1 Heat-shrink Tubing                                                Teflon Heatshrink Tubing Oddy Test Results

This Teflon has a four-to-one heat shrink ratio allowing one size of tubing to be used for a large range of materials (e.g. the 5/64" diameter tubing will work for all three sizes of our headless stainless steel pins). The Teflon is slippery enough to get around the bends in your pins or mounts yet holds well when shrunk.  It takes acrylic paint well for patinating pins to match objects. It shrinks with a heat gun at about 650°F/350°C.
