Benchmark Butterfly Bookmounts

The Benchmark Butterfly Bookmounts are designed to provide unequaled flexibility in the display of rare books and valuable manuscripts.  Unlike with other book cradles, book stands and book supports, the Benchmark Bookmount uses plexiglas support plates fitted to hinged brass legs which are adjustable for angle and height.  Each support plate "butterflys" on a pair of hinge joints, allowing full variation in the angle to which the book opens.  Additional accessories provide even more display variation and flexibility.  Oh, and don’t forget our poly strap.  The soft polyethylene gently keeps the pages open to your desired display and also helps support the text block.  It’s the kinder, gentler alternative to Mylar strapping!

There are two distinct book mount formats: The Horizontal, to display books parallel to the display surface, and the Upright, to display books at a raised angle.  Our different size Bookmounts easily cover books ranging from a diminutive 3"w. x 5"h. to a large folio 18"w. x 25"h.

The Benchmark Horizontal Butterfly Bookmounts 

The Horizontal Bookmounts present the book parallel to the display surface.  The plexiglas book support plates are mounted on four sturdy brass legs attached to a flat plexiglas base.  Each support plate butterflys on a pair of hinge joints, allowing you to select and lock in the degree to which the book is open.  The legs are adjustable in height by as much as 1" (25mm) to accommodate different openings.  In addition, the support plates slide in or out to accommodate various spine thicknesses.

The Horizontal Bookmount comes in four sizes defined by the size of the plexiglas book support plates: 
     Mini  (scaled down with only two legs),  Standard,  Intermediate  and  Folio

Quarter-Turn Display Plates

If you already use Standard, Intermediate, or Folio Horizontal Bookmounts, you can easily convert them to display book pages viewed parallel to the spine.  Remove the regular plates from the brass hinges and slip on these quarter-turn plates, then rotate the mount 90°. A versatile and efficient solution.

Brass Hinges with longer legs                   

Here's a "left-hand" pair of hinges with 2" (50mm) legs. When displaying books with spines thicker than 1" (25mm), remove the regular legs from the brass sleeve and insert these longer legs.

The Benchmark Upright Butterfly Bookmount

The Upright Bookmounts display books tilted 40° from flat decks or shelves.  The base is made of solid brass rod. It is fitted with two telescoping hinged brass legs, each of which holds an independently adjustable plexiglas book support plate.  The support plates butterfly on the hinges, allowing you to adjust the degree to which the book is open.  To further accommodate variations in page opening, the legs are adjustable in height by as much as 1" (25mm).  The plates also move laterally to accommodate different spine thicknesses.  The Upright Butterfly Bookmounts have the additional advantage of being able to show text and cover simultaneously.

It comes in three sizes, defined by the dimensions of the plexiglas book support plates:   
                                                                   Mini,  Standard  and  Intermediate

The following Accessory increases the versatility of Upright Bookmounts:

Cover-Only Display Plate and Fitting

To display single sheets or closed books, remove the regular support plates and hinged legs.  Replace with the Cover-Only Plate and special brass fitting.

When the book stays open but the pages need restraint, our clear, non-adhesive 4 mil polyethylene strap is softer than the conventionally used mylar and does a kinder job. Also useful for preventing text block drag.
